Spooky Cotehele - A collection of Short Stories by Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group

Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group have been invited by Cotehele House (National Trust) to present a series of short stories based on a Haunted House. The writers group have made several visits to the medieval property making observations around the unique history, tapestries and other furnishings of the property, as well as studying paranormal reports and local myths.

The results will be available to hear on Friday 7th, 14th, 21st and 28 October 2011 between 5.30 - 7pm in the darkness of Cotehele.

The Cottonian Collection

The Cottonian Collection is a rich and varied collection of artefacts currently housed in Plymouth Museum. Originally the collection was stored in Plymouth Proprietary Library.

As a creative writing project, the Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group are going to study random items from this very comprehensive collection and write poetry/short stories from the inspiration gathered.

Arcanum: A Collection of Short Stories

Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group now see their first publication entitled: Arcanum: A Collection of Short Stories, based on topics of the Gothic, mystery and historical genres. This has been printed to celebrate the inaugural National Short Story Week and is available in Plymouth Proprietary Library.

Additionally, we are pleased that the Plymouth Arts Centre will be circulating this publication for viewing in The Green Room. Be warned ... there is a broad interpretation of Gothic!

'Ice, Mud and Blood' - Creative Writing Workshop with Clare George

We were pleased to see the novelist Clare George again in Plymouth Proprietary Library for another creative writing workshop on Monday 23 August 2010.

The theme of this workshop was: 'Ice, Mud and Blood' and is based on a book of the same title written by Professor Chris Turney; a Paleoclimatologist.

This will help mark the Bicentenary of Plymouth Proprietary Library and the rapid progression of the Mutley Greenbank Trust to meld the milestone of the early 21st century with a wide range of creative writing inspired by Plymouth writers. Plymouth Authors and Writers at Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group may like to be aware that their work can be submitted for a future anthology of creative writing. As Plymouth Proprietary Library is celebrating its Bicentenary Year, we would like to mark the occasion by assembling a future publication of several genres to demonstrate the range of work we cover. Remember - don't throw away anything you write; keep it and if necessary re-edit and re-work it. The ideas are yours - gems dug from your own creative quarry. When gemstones are dug out of the earth they look like dull lumps of quartz. Only with fine cutting and polishing do they become the sparkling jewels we recognize them as ... and the same can be said for writing.

Clare George, Novelist and author of The Cloud Chamber and The Evangelist ran a Creative Writing Workshop at Plymouth Proprietary Library on Thursday 8th April 2010. The theme was 'Election Day 2040' and continues with the 'Imagining the Future 2040' project currently running with Exeter University and the Arts Council. The day went extrememly quickly and the content many of us found challenging - but was nevertheless not without a wide range of material to base our work on. Details of the Project are at:
